International Baccalaureate Music is designed for students with a strong interest and background in music. This course is designed to promote greater awareness and understanding of both the power and variety of musical experiences through the study of four areas of inquiry. Topics include studying music in the following Areas of Inquiry: Music for Sociocultural and Political Expression, Music for Listening and Performance, Music for Dramatic Impact, Movement, and Entertainment, and Music for Technology in the Electronic and Digital Age. Both worldwide and historical perspectives are required of students, as well as a commitment to creating and performing music in all mediums. Students are encouraged to be involved in some aspect of ensemble performance in addition to private musical study in this course. Wind Ensemble Students are required to continue performing in Wind Ensemble throughout IB Music as part of the IB Music Course requirements for ensemble performance. Students will complete a portfolio of written research, compositions, and performances in place of a final IB Exam. Students can expect at least 30 minutes of homework per class meeting, as well as independent work. This course does require mandatory attendance or performance at after school concerts and recitals (2-3 times per year).
Prerequisite: Successful completion of at least 1 year of an advanced music course such as Piano Honors, Guitar, or Wind Ensemble. Music Theory experience is also strongly recommended. Higher Level is only offered by Audition and Teacher Interview.
