The IB language ab initio course is a two-year language acquisition course for students with little or no experience in the language, in which students will be introduced to the rich cultures of the Hispanophone/Francophone worlds and develop an awareness of culturally appropriate use of language. The course is organized into five themes, with each theme comprising a comprehensive and varied list of topics that provide students with opportunities to practice and explore the language and to develop intercultural understanding. Through the development of receptive, productive and interactive skills, students develop the ability to respond and interact appropriately in a defined range of everyday situations. The course culminates in the International Baccalaureate ab initio oral and written examinations in the target language .
